“What is the essence of NLP when applied to guiding change? How can a coach or leader work with language patterns? This is what fourteen interim managers, top advisors and coaches from the Ministry of Transport and Public Works set to work with. During a two-day NLP workshop on June 22 and 23, 2009 at the Oud Poelgeest Estate they learned the latest and most effective NLP techniques by dr. Richard Bandler.
The semi-annual classes by the department “Office Advisors” this time were led by Michel La Poutre and Joost van der Leij. “Office Advisors” is the club for internal advisors, very experienced interim managers and top coaches in Transport and Public Works; invest in mutual training days to learn to and from each other is high on their list of priorities.
NLP techniques offer exceptional opportunities that allow changes in an individual, team or organisation to take place much simpler and more pleasantly. The powerful language of change and the effective and simple techniques by dr. Richard Bandler add value to the work of transformers, coaches and interim leaders. The participants learned during the workshops primarily by acting and experiencing. Techniques such as change reversal technique, making decisions with NLP and personal back casting proved to be very easy to implement. It makes a professional transformer’s work significantly more effective.
Personal back casting helps people to take action way beyond their ‘regular’ limitations. The technique is based on an inspirational future far away where the coach gradually flashes back to the ‘here and now’. Using this technique, people learn that they can do more than they thought, can use experiences from the past and at the same time change now what is necessary to obtain more success and fun in their life and in their work. In addition to personal back casting is the comparable collective back casting which can also easily be applied within teams and even within entire organisations.
Michel has worked with NLP as a practicing transformer for some time. He often applies techniques and language patterns by Bandler in his work as a coach, advisor and interim leader. “It is an excellent way to communicate and guide change processes better. Excellent communication is also crucial if an interim leader wants to achieve change. Too often people, teams and organisations focus primarily on their limitations so that they don’t see enough options to achieve change. With reinforced self-influence and communication skills, people who want to change are better equipped to leap from the present situation to the desired situation. IF they learn how to make this change themselves it is easy to accomplish the change well. Whether it’s about a difficult change like implementing an IT system or a soft change in the organisational culture”.
